Cluj-Napoca International Airport Announces Expansion of Departures Terminal

Cluj-Napoca’s “Avram Iancu” International Airport recently signed a contract for a significant expansion project worth over RON 225 million. The project includes expanding the departures terminal on the north side and the aircraft parking platform, aiming to improve passenger facilities and accommodate the airport’s growing traffic.

According to Viorel Federiga, President of the Board of Directors of Cluj International Airport, the investments resulting from the contract will ensure better facilities for passengers with efforts being made to obtain financing from European funds for this purpose.

The expansion project covers a total area of 16,200 sqm which includes 7,200 sqm for the departures terminal and 9,000 sqm for the aircraft parking platform. The airport has set a goal to host over 3.1 million passengers this year with approximately 60% of the project’s funding coming from European funds and the state’s budget.

Featuring state-of-the-art C3 type security devices the new spaces will also focus on enhancing passengers’ comfort during processing. The project aims to optimize passenger flow management during peak times and ensure that airport operations are conducted under appropriate conditions.

Contractors Bog’Art SRL, UTI Construction and Facility Management SA, and ACI Cluj, along with their subcontractors will carry out the project will an expected completion date of December 31, 2023.

David Ciceo, the director of the airport, mentioned that they anticipate an increase in passenger traffic in the coming years as well. In the previous year the airport reported a record 2,645,000 passengers after two years of pandemic-related disruptions.
